THE DIRECT METHOD IN LANGUAGE TEACHING
Keywords:

The Direct Method is a language teaching approach that emphasizes direct engagement with the target language while avoiding the learners' native language. This paper explores its historical background, methodology, effectiveness, and challenges in language acquisition. The study reviews existing literature and research to analyze how the Direct Method influences language learning outcomes, particularly in oral proficiency. The findings indicate that the method significantly enhances speaking and listening skills due to its immersive nature. However, challenges such as the lack of grammar instruction and the necessity for highly skilled teachers remain major limitations. The study suggests that while the Direct Method is highly effective for conversational fluency, a blended approach incorporating structured grammar instruction may yield better overall language acquisition results.
